5 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

In the first of an occasional series, we reprint selected stories from our archives. How different Relubbus was just five years ago!

WEST CORNWALL IN SONG
The Reverend Bartholomew Peninula has been an advocate of the virtues of song for as long as he can remember. He has gathered singing talents from the lengths and breadths of Mouzel and environs to put together a ‘winning troupe’.

Pictured on the right of the Reverend gentleman are Mathew Laity (29) from Bologas, Martin Rodda (32) from Tresvennack, Davey Kneebone (41) from Chyenhal, Derek "Shortie" Semmens (37) from Trereife Smelting House, and Philadelpha Pentreath (71) from Kerris, sporting moustache and standing to the right.

The troupe will enter the West Cornwall singing contest with high hopes of getting through to the All-Cornwall event.

Little lost souls looking for a home

Just released from the Madron home for the criminally insane, Charlie Paynter and Madge Baragwaneth pictured here with their "cheeld" known as the "babby" are looking for a loving home in the West Cornwall area.

With several murders apiece, the deadly duo have caused something of a stir in a number of village communities. However, it is hoped that finding them a home in a larger community such as that of Penzance or Crows an Wra would provide the stability that these young folk need to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Offers of help from good Christian homes will be welcomed and should be addressed to the editor of the Roundup, who will forward them to the authorities.

Young "Woman" seeks position

Jemima Trevithal (24), formerly Michael Bollock, a granite quarryman from Rosecarne, is seeking a position as a lady’s maid to a lady of quality, preferably in the Penzance area.

Jemima describes herself as a realist with a cheerful disposition. "My maither d’say that I got winsome looks and oughtie ave been a young lady an I aren’t going to give up on my dream of being the best in the West as a lady’s maid."

Jemima is hopeful of being taken into a home of gentility, where she can further develop her feminine side to a point approaching some degree of credibility.

Do you suffer from headaches? Do you have piles? Does excessive flatulence plague you in those tender moments of togetherness with the one you would love? Do you spend longer on the toilet than you would like? Do you have to wear incontinence nappies? Does your cat have to wear spectacles? Do you (or your cat) have halitosis? Do you suffer from having insufficient money? Do you have ginger hair?

If you have had to answer yes to any of these questions, then help is at last at hand! Thelonius Polweath-Bergamot's new Elixir promises you a new life!

The famous goatherd and alchemist, Thelonius Polweath-Bergamot (51), working from his eyrie at Mayon Green Crescent in Sennen, has, after many years, succeeded in perfecting a magic Elixir, which will take care of all these problems and more!

The ingredients of the elixir are, of course, a closely guarded secret, but Thelonius assures us that they are all distilled from naturally occurring substances found in the environs of Sennen and his goat compound. There is indeed a distinctly 'goatey' smell to the viscous brown fluid that is the elixir. (When quizzed by our Sennen reporter about the magic ingredients, Thelonius just gazed back from his mesmerisingly droopy eyes and said ...nothing.)

The cost of the Elixir is high at £195 for a 5 cl bottle but, as Thelonius says, "Wha's a few bob, when you're fixin' all they problems?"

Thelonius recommends a course of treatment at a bottle a day for fully seven years before the most difficult problems, such as ginger hair or no money, are completely vanquished.

Note: As the Roundup is keen to ensure that it takes advertising money only from bona fide traders - and from no charlatans - we would be happy to hear from anyone after their seven year course of treatment to assure us of the efficacy of Mr Polweath-Bergamot's Elixir.

Hanging by a thread..?

William Ladner (13), drummer of St Just Silver Band, has begun his annual fund-raising efforts for Comic Relief. William is suspended from a swinging trapeze secured only by the curve of his neck and the fervent hope that he will not drop to his death -- no safety net!

William intends to stay up -- without a break -- for 72 hours and all the while he will be playing drum solos, at 10 pence a time, as requested by the public.

Last year, William raised an astonishing 90 pence for good causes and he is determined to better that achievement this time round. William can be viewed -- hanging precariously -- at the Mousehole Methodist Youth Club from Thursday to Saturday.

Local Tycoon starts Charitable Foundation

Richard Quick, the West Cornwall building magnate, who is estimated to be worth some £35 million, has decided that it is time to share his wealth with the less advantaged in the community. He has started up a new charity called "Quick Money". The needy are requested to telephone the charity on an 0800 number and explain the nature of their need for cash. No call is expected to cost more than £4.50.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to call, since Mr Quick has promised to allot the lucky annual winner one of his homes on a holiday estate in Hayle.

When questioned by the West Cornwall Fraud Squad about certain flaws in the charitable nature of his new undertaking, Mr Quick brushed all criticisms aside with a flick of his cigarette, explaining that as long as someone benefited from the charity (possibly himself, in view of the volume of calls) no one was getting hurt.
Loopy Lesneweth is back in town!

Crowds gathered at the advance ticket office of the Sennen Picture House for the sell-out tour of the man they like to call Loopy Laughing Jack Lesnoweth of Lescudjack. The renowned petard amazes his audiences with his ability to blow out a candle at a distance of 35 feet by the sheer force of wind power. Loopy eats only baked beans and raw onions and likes to think that it is his rigid eating regime which keeps him on top of his game.

By day, Loopy works as a driver for St Erth Creamery. All his earnings from his evening entertainment work go to the Newlyn home for fallen Methodist young women, which explains why his act is strongly endorsed by the ministers of the St Just Methodist Circuit.

The Reverend Horton Bolitho commented that the Lord works in wondrous ways and stated that Loopy had been blessed by a divine wind.

Global Warming -- Watch Out!

Intrepid Cornish Inventor, Joseph Bodruggan from Copperhouse in Hayle, has done it again. Aware that the planet faces its greatest challenge in Global Warming, Joe has applied his restless mind to finding a practical solution.

The answer has come in the form of his "bikodrome". A skilled bike rider is balanced on the drum and peddles like mad. The drum turns, producing an electrical current, which can be made available to the National Grid. Joe’s plan is that every house should have a "bikodrome", powered by an illegal immigrant.

The Roundup is proud to have been able to bring you this story first -- before the Nationals.

Passed Ovver (Obituaries)

Welcome to the ever-popular "'Oo’s Dead?" section of the Roundup!

The first thing that some of our older readers do when they get their hands on their edition of the Roundup is to check up on who’s passed away. This month has seen the usual harvest of the Grim Reaper in the luscious lands of West Penwith and it is with great sadness that we convey the news that the following folk have gone to meet their maker:
Eliza Treloar (86), who lived most of her life as a man (Tommy Treloar, a building labourer with a penchant for sombreros), has died in the Barncoose psychiatric hospital for confused trans-sexuals.

Eliza, as she insisted on being known after her 66th year, had fathered a total of 62 children with 11 different mothers -- all over West Penwith. Amazingly, none of the mothers ever knew of or met any of the others. As he had been a jobbing labourer, it was always assumed that he was "away on a job" and never suspected that he could be away on the job.

Eliza continued working -- as a man -- until his 66th year, when he quit to apply for immediate admittance to the Barncoose hospital, where he swapped his sombrero for a flowing floral flamenco dress and castanets. He never left the hospital once and, when the mothers of his children separately found their way to the doors of the hospital, he denied all knowledge of both them and their children, screaming "I aren’t able to faither no children -- I’m a bleddy woman!"

The funeral will take place at Gluvias Street Methodist Church at 2.00 pm next Wednesday. Mourners will be welcome, but are asked to send no flowers. Instead they should feel free to contribute to the Treloar Abandoned Children’s Fund.

Isaac Trenery (45), a devoted amateur dramatist and much-loved local man, passed away quietly and most unexpectedly at home over the weekend. Mr Trenery worked on the Cheese counter at the Lower Co-op in Penzance since he left Heamoor School at the age of 15. He never married, despite his obvious popularity with the housewives, who were prepared to queue for hours to buy his cheese. He lived quietly at home with his mother and his pet gerbils, Cindy and Celandine. He discovered his dramatic bent rather late in life, becoming, at the invitation of a friend, a member of the West Cornwall Men’s Drama Group. Although he most often took girls’ parts, he did occasionally play men and is seen on the left in his favourite role of Macbeth in last year’s production at Nancledra.

Limpy Polglaze (67), owner of the popular Russian Revolutionary Shoe Shop in Bread Street, Penzance, passed away on Monday Night. Limpy leaves a widow, Agnes, and three adult children.

Limpy was a brilliant and colourful Penzance entrepreneur, who was always on the lookout to corner a market. He started his career by launching the Italian Operatic Fish and Chip Shop in Hayle. Tiring quickly, as he did, with every new idea, he moved on to his next "big opportunity" with the opening of Poseidon’s, his Underwater Bookshop, between Penzance Harbour and Battery Rocks. Losing interest in this venture (along with his entire stock and two staff members) following a bad winter storm, he began his theme of "big winners", a string of retail opportunities with different historical themes. Previous themes have included the Elizabethan Lavatory Company; the Tudor Television Company (featuring the world’s only entirely wooden TV set); Legionary’s, the Imperial Roman bakery and delicatessen; and also Atahuallpa’s, the Inca menswear company.

Limpy, a man unfazed by the fact that his left leg was a good four inches shorter than his right, was contented to the last. His funeral will take place at the Kiev-Pechersk Cave Monastery and afterwards (quite a bit afterwards) at the Truro Crematorium.

Dickie "Banjo" Trevains (54) passes on. Commuters from Penzance Railway station will have been familiar with the sight of Dickie Trevains and his banjo. With only one song in his repertoire, Dickie would go to the Station on his days off from work and pluck away enthusiastically at his banjo to accompany himself singing, in his falsetto voice, his Spice Girls’ favourite "Two become one".

Thought harmless until his unfortunate arrest some years back for exposing himself to passing schoolgirls, Dickie tried his best, despite his characteristic "toppest" top hat, to simply blend in with local society. He came to West Penwith at the age of 22 and worked for SWEB, then St Just Co-op, and finally Morrisons. Never marrying, he leaves his pet pig, Pauline, to the bacon counter at Morrisons.

LONELY HEARTS

The Roundup has been besieged by the unattached of West Penwith to offer an introduction facility. We are pleased to do so in this edition and hope that the young people featured here will soon find the partner of their dreams.

Looking for Love in Tredenneck
Lavinia Barnicoat (23) of Bosliven Lane, Tredinnick is looking for a man to complete her life. Lavinia lives at home with her widowed mother and works at the nearby Chynoweth farm as a labourer. Her interests are cross stitch, Sudoku, line dancing, making home-made candles, tormenting small animals, and music. Her passion is the jew’s harp, on which she can play the flight of the bumble bee at devastating speed. Her dream is to find a Prince Charming with whom she can share a life of luxury in a place like St Just, in a house with an inside toilet. Interested Romeos should reply to Box 3024.

In the mood for romance in Ludgvan

Amelia Lewellian (29) of Ludgvan is a catch for any young man. Only child of dairy farmer Ambrose Lewellian (78), she brings with her the warming prospect of the thriving farm in years to come. Close observers of her photograph will have noticed that, whilst Amelia has a fine head with a fetching face marred only by two hardly noticeable moles, she does lack a body. This has held her back in the courting stakes, as she finds it tricky to engage in any of the activities requiring a body. Ambrose hopes that the "farm’ll swing it. Plenty a boys out there ud luv to git their ‘ands on a farm like gis". Amelia remains hopeful. Box 2037 is the one to write to.

Shy but willing to try

Rachel Lanyon (27), a lap-dancer from Gwavas Estate in Newlyn, is a shy retiring girl looking for a similarly quiet man. She says that he should be of advanced years, poor in health, but very rich. "I aren’t a gold-digger. I duh jest find rich men easier to talk to." Rachel lists her interests as collecting old coins of the realm, antiques, jewellery, and fast cars. Her as yet unfulfilled dreams are to "'ave snails in some posh restaurant in Penzance and to do a bit o dogging at the Taj Mahal in India". Interested men (wealthy and over the age of 85) should write to Box 2047.

Fancy a bender?

Gay plumber, Thomas Nankervis (37) of Treave, is looking for a long term relationship. Tired of playing the gay scene in Treave, Thomas is looking to settle down. His interests are bowls, darts, model railways, collecting bus and train numbers, racing his toy yacht, and cooking and baking. Thomas also plays the triangle in Helston Silver band. Interested males, preferably from Treave, are asked to write to Box 4589.

Doctor looking for love

Dr Richard "Scatty" Botheras (42) is a colourful character on the St Ives social and medical scene. Hating dealing with illness and ailments, Scatty likes to cheer up all those he meets with jolly japes, laughs and fun. "Why worry about the illness that will soon have you dead, just have a laugh and a chuckle with me instead!"

With one of the shorter patient lists in medical history (he only had 52 patients left at time of writing),
Scatty is looking for a woman to help him with his burden of caring for the sick in St Ives. Box 4521 is the one to write to.

Are you ready for the Boscobba experience?

Grace "Asbo" Friggens (25), of Penorven Drive, Boscobba, is looking for a brave man willing to give her a second chance. With a series of convictions for unprovoked spontaneous knife assaults on the young men of Boscobba, Grace has been finding it hard to form relationships.

Currently unemployed, it is her dream to find a young man with whom to settle down and make a home, preferably in Boscobba. With a population of just 35, this could be a tall order, as she has seriously injured all the young males currently living in the village. However, she fervently hopes that this serene picture of female pulchritude will lure young males from all around West Penwith. Box 2987 is the one to write to.

The Ladies are back!

Many readers have asked for another picture of the Gwithian Ladies Pedicycle Club. We cannot accede to Mr Bosher Thomas’s request for them to be shown in the nude, but they are modelling the latest in knitted cycle wear -- the next best thing.

Pictured, from the left, are June Beckerleg (26), Mary Hocking (24), Eliza Tonkin (25), Gracie Chellew (29), Martha Tregenza (18) and Faith Kelynack (19).

Since they only have the one bike between them, the ladies are keen to meet men of property in West Penwith, who would be prepared to invest in the Club. (No hanky panky!)

CHRISTMAS ISSUE, 2007. Issue 18, 17th December 2007

A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL -- FROM THE CHILDREN OF RELUBBUS
Little Loveday (7) and Archie Andrewartha (8), seen here holding their little baby sister, Tabitha, wish you all -- wherever you may be -- on behalf of all the children of Relubbus, a most cordial
Merry Christmas!

And

a Happy New Year!

Loveday and Archie came first in the junior section of the annual animal torture competition sponsored by the Bin Laden Institute for the Criminally Deranged.

They have been chosen to be the official faces of the 2007 Relubbus Christmas celebrations.

Christmas in Relubbus

Lights cheer the soul amidst the winter snow;
Sweet, hot mulled wine sets faces all aglow.
The scent of turkey wafts across the town,
While children run, contented, up and down.

They pause a moment, time itself stands still;
They think of all sad children, poor or ill,
And conjure up a globe of loving care,
And blow it to those tykes, across the frozen air.

CHRISTMAS WEATHER FORECAST FOR RELUBBUS
The question in everyone's mind, as every year, is whether there will be a White Christmas.

Of course, the eastern hills grouped around Mount Relubbus -- permanently snow-capped -- can expect their usual thick carpeting of snow at this time of year and so there is no threat to the booming skiing industry, which brings in thousands of winter sports enthusiasts every year to Relubbus International Airport. So scenes like the one on the left, showing a lesson in progress on the lower slopes of Mount Relubbus, are under no threat whatever.

The same predictability applies to the tropical beaches of Praa Sands and Perranuthnoe, which will see further thousands of sun-seeking tourists streaming in to enjoy the cloudless skies, soaring temperatures, and sandy beaches.

The picture on the left shows Praa Sands at its warm and sunny best, early one fine winter morning before all the tourists arrive. The temperature is already 25 degrees Centigrade and can be expected to climb yet further

However, the much bigger big question is whether a snow flake will fall upon the roof of the Greater Relubbus Meteorological Office, which is situated in the middle of Relubbus, not far from Boswedden Lane and a full two miles from either Mount Relubbus or Praa Sands. In order to get an authoritative answer to this big question, the Roundup has spared no expense and despatched its reporters to consult Abu Dabby Jago at Gulval.

Abu, shown here on the left, a shelf-stacker for Morrisons by day, is also the leader of an extremist Methodist fundamentalist grouping. He is reputedly in daily contact with the Almighty and claims that he "looks after weather matters for Him". Abu was sadly non-committal about snow prospects for central Relubbus, stating that he hadn't made up his mind yet whether he would organise snow. He advised us to wait until the day and then we would see what he had decided. So will it snow, or won't it? We'll just have to wait and see!

BREWING MONKS TO FOUND "MONKERY" IN RELUBBUS
By Social Correspondent Rendell Janner
At the Greater Relubbus Urban Council (GRUC) meeting on Tuesday, Council Leader Billy Spargo announced that he had contacted the Abbot of the celebrated Kloster Andechs monastery in Bavaria, famed for its production of high-class liqueurs and beers, with an invitation to found a sister (or should that be "brother") "monkery" in Relubbus.

The new monastery will be a copy of the original Kloster Andechs monastery (shown on the left).

According to Cllr. Spargo, the new "monkery" and brewery will stimulate employment in the area. It will be administered by skilled German monk-brewers who will relocate from Bavaria. However, as many of these do not speak English, a substantial number of novice monks will be recruited from the local population, to assist with the brewing and to "interface" with the local population.

It seems, though, that the prospect of celibacy does not appeal to Relubbus young men. Petroc Jelbert (17) said, "I've 'eard that to become a monk you duh 'ave to 'ave yer knackers sawed off. I 'ent 'avin' thaat! Me an' muh girlfren' duh 'ave 3 kids already, an' we're plannin' tuh 'ave more!"

However, it appears that since the announcement, 2048 local married men have applied to become brewing monks.

WHO PAID FOR SPARGO'S MADEIRAN LOVE-NEST?
By Jan ("Mad") Carew, Private Eye Investigative Journalist of the Year 2007, on Madeira

The luxury seaside villa on the left is thought to be owned by none other than the controversial leader of the Greater Relubbus Urban Council, Billy Spargo. The villa is situated in a prime location in the exclusive village of Skollob, on the north coast of Madeira. According to locals, in recent weeks Councillor Spargo has been spotted in the village (heavily disguised as an ancient mariner), strolling arm-in-arm with Cecilia, the estranged wife of French President Nicholas Sarcozy.

Luxury villas in this area of Madeira typically sell for sums in excess of £8M, and questions are already being asked by Spargo's political opponents about how Cllr. Spargo was able to afford such a property, given that his family undertaking business is known to be close to bankruptcy. There have even been rumours of an "unofficial", unsecured, loan from Relubbus Central Bank Governor Mervyn Spargo.

Cllr. Spargo has long been a target of rumour and innuendo, but thus far has always managed to outmanoeuvre his enemies, hiding behind a cloak of evasion, disingenuousness, and half-truths. Indeed, in the Relubbus council chamber he is known as "Mr Asbestos", because he is thought to be fire-proof. However, is this latest financial irregularity the final straw that could break the camel's back? Could Spargo's long and undistinguished career be about to end in scandal and disgrace? Watch this space for further developments!

Getting to know Relubbus
Why is Boswedden Lane so named? Boswedden Lane is named after William Boswedden. Surprisingly, some people in Relubbus have not heard of this formidable polymath, so we present here a small pen picture of the great man.

William Boswedden was born at a very young age. In fact, he was not even one when he entered this world in 18th century Relubbus. His parents, Wakfer and Mirdaddio, were very poor gold merchants. This simply means that they weren't very good at it, but at least they had money.

Mirdaddio conceived the young William after many years of trying; Wakfer too had been very trying. All their efforts came to fruition with William's birth, when Mirdaddio was aged 42 and when Wakfer was aged 81.

William achieved early greatness at the tender age of 7, when he weighed in at 12 stone. It was true that he was hungry for knowledge, but true also that he was always hungry for food.

Pictured here on the left at birth, William was a sombre little fellow who, in between eating, soaked up knowledge like a sponge. Before he was 9, he was fluent in 14 languages, including Japanese, even without books or any instruction in the language.

By the age of 10, he had achieved a weight of just over 26 stone. In between eating, he managed to complete some of his most magical musical compositions, including the highly soporific 6-and-a-half-hour symphony for solo bass drum. But his restless spirit did not confine itself to the world of music, for he also began to experiment in the natural sciences. He developed a colour television set, which was perfect in every way. Sadly there were no broadcast television programmes for him to receive in those days.

By the age of 13, William weighed in at just under 40 stone. Never much of a socialiser or given to any sport other than competitive eating, at which he excelled, William was now incapable of independent movement. He was kept in a re-inforced and covered wagon in front of the parental home. This wagon afforded him some mobility and, given the waste-hole included in its construction, enabled him to be hosed down regularly.

Thus he lived, confined to his wagon, for another 60 years. He ate continuously, achieving a dead weight of 94 stones. However, he also continued to make great contributions to the cultural and economic life of Relubbus. He wrote countless poems, 32 plays, composed 72 symphonies -- all for the same instrument -- and invented the motor car, the telephone, and the Ipod, together with several other as yet undiscovered items.

His furious intellectual and eating activities did not impede his sex life. In his teens, he displayed a great fondness for badgers, which he was always careful not to squash. As an adult, he married four times and fathered 16 children.

After his death Boswedden Lane was so named in his honour. It is now the most sought-after address in Relubbus and is home to much of the diplomatic community here.
Plans to erect a monument to William in Boswedden Lane have always been deferred for cost reasons. The Council has now agreed that, provided that a statue is not made life-size, but merely miniature, one can be erected at the top of Boswedden Lane, in the flower bed next to the gents' toilets.

Come for a Christmas Holiday Break at the Grey River Hotel!!
Ladies and gents, Give you and yours a break this Christmas and come to this perfect rural idyll and allow yourself to be spoilt and pampered at this 5 star luxury shed.

Situated next to the fast-flowing waters of the unspoilt Grey river (the sewerage treatment plant is actually a full quarter of a mile downstream!), the "shed" comprises 5 interconnected one-room apartments lovingly and carefully constructed last month from natural materials (bamboo from a neighbouring field) by the owner, Larry, and his partner, Steve.

Neither Larry nor Steve has used in the past six weeks and they both have seen a doctor -- albeit at a distance -- within the past year or so. You can be sure that hygiene is their first and last thought.

On the left, one can see the grand entrance to the hotel, which, uniquely in the entire world, is entered from the river.

Health and safety are the watchwords at this hotel, (situated as it is on the Grey river floodplain) and a rope is thrown to any guest trying to make it through the sometimes treacherous currents to the front door. Once the guest makes it to the sumptuous antechamber, which is complete with floor, walls and broadleaf roof, he is instantly relieved of all monies required to cover the anticipated costs of his stay and then shown to his quarters.

You will have gathered that this is no ordinary hotel. It is administered according to the finest and highest principles of hygiene, ecology, and gay pride. Larry is quick to point out that, although the hotel's ambience has been specially designed to make gays feel at home, that doesn't mean that anyone else isn't welcome. He insists that the welcome mat will be rolled out for anyone who books in, regardless of age, gender, creed, and sexual orientation. The only requirement is that they pay the bill up front. The cost of a room is £4,500 per day. This might seem a little costly, but it does cover the cost of everything.

Larry (pictured left) says, "Everything at the hotel is natural. We don't cook -- we go searching for "edibles" within a radius of half a mile from the hotel. What we find, we give the guests -- uncooked so as to preserve the goodness. We always offer luscious grasses, sometimes there will be a tastey mollusc or two and, as a special (for an additional fee), we will venture up to the A30 for roadkill, though the guests must prepare the food themselves, as it would not be kosher for us to do it. There are no gadgets or radios or televisions in our rooms -- everything is "natural" -- we use no electricity. Guests can hear the sounds of the rushing water -- of any falling rain, which they might also be able to feel, if it permeates through the broadleaf roof. They will be close to nature and their souls will be refreshed by their stay with us."

Eager to please and enrich the lives of others, Larry and Steve have given up their own room in the hotel and have retired to a nearby caravan to allow some lucky guest to enjoy the unspoilt natural glory of one of their rooms. However, once hailed, they are never more than five minutes away and will always be there to welcome new guests and take their payments for a stay at this unforgettable hotel.

For a Christmas Special, don't delay:
Don't stint yourself -- come along and be gay!

RELUBBUS CENTRAL BANK ACTS TO QUELL PANIC
By Business Correspondent Duane Polkinghorne
The Relubbus Central Bank (RCB) has had to step in an attempt to dispel further customer fears about the troubled Western Rock bank. A few weeks ago, angry investors queued for hours to withdraw their funds from the Western Rock in Relubbus High Street, following persistent rumours that the bank was financially insolvent due to unwise investment in the American "prime" mortgage market. It seemed that the crisis had been averted after assurances from the Western Rock CEO that all was well.

However, it seems that investors were not convinced. New queues began to form outside the Western Rock yesterday, and the bank's board were forced to call for assistance from the Central Bank.

Relubbus Central Bank Governor Mervyn Spargo said yesterday, "Crisis? What crisis? The Central Bank has vast reserves of £248.98, all of which it has made available to Western Rock. Problem solved."
LONELY HEARTS
Alas for those without the flame of love!
But help arrives from guiding gods above,
Who beckon to the hav'n of affection --
Safely to be enjoyed, without infection!

Letitia Tonkin is an amazing 17 year old, who, at first sight, appears to be a bundle of contradictions. She works part time as a receptionist at a garage on the Long Rock Industrial Estate. The other half of the day she works as a Tarot card reader at the Pengarth Day Care Centre in Morrab Gardens. As far as relationships go, she describes herself as "an experimentalist", having had partners of both sexes and of widely varying ages. (The oldest was 94!)

The mother of three children, Letitia now dreams of finding a perfect father to her kids (and maybe we'll have some more!). She would like an enterprising young man with his own business -- maybe an ice cream van. She is fond of telly and of reading HEAT and Hello magazines and would appreciate a young man who would share these interests with her. If your heart is thumping at the thought of Letitia, then Box 4582 is the one for you.

Maurice Treglown (42) is an aspiring male model from Bone Valley, where he lives quietly with his tame fox, Billy, and his widowed mother, Agatha (75). Over the past couple of decades, modelling assignments in and around Heamoor have been thin on the ground and the resultant lack of income has cramped Maurice's style. He is still waiting to have his first relationship and, given his total lack of experience, is not sure of his orientation. He points out that of the two important beings in his life so far, one of them, Billy, is male and the other, his mother, is female, and he gets along well with both of them. Maurice would ideally like to make a friend from Bone Valley (possibly from the caravan park?), but for the right person he would be prepared to come into Heamoor. If you would like to help this shy young man make his first excursion into the world of relationships, then Box 6521 is the one.

Maude Pierce (33) is a confident young woman who has opened her own solicitor's practice in Hayle. Unusually for someone in the legal profession, she is also a practising witch and, although she would like to find a partner equally interested in Wicca, she has yet to meet a Wiccan male who appeals to her. She has a grey cat, called "Smokey", and a budgerigar called "Mr Pubes".

Maude is a keen pianist and practises for at least one hour each day. She is an accomplished home-maker and bakes mouth-watering cakes, having come first two years running in the Goldsithney nude home baking championships. Maude describes herself as "a bit of a goer" and says that she has very strong physical needs. Being forthright, she adds that she does not mind if she has more than one partner, if they don't mind either. Box 9924 if she is your type of girl.

Trencrom "Betty" Behenna (32) has been one of the more colourful and best known members of the Crowlas gay scene. Betty is a monumental mason by day, specialising in granite tombstones, and a drag queen by night, specialising in anything in Crowlas wearing trousers.

Betty's family has been making Cornish ice cream for many decades and he was destined to take his place at the head of the family firm. However, his life was changed at a stroke. Before Betty ever knew that he was gay, he was once serving at the family ice cream parlour in Porthleven, when a young man came in and asked for a double scoop. Their eyes met and in an instant Betty had fallen for him. He eloped to Crowlas, the acknowledged centre of fairly wild gay lifestyles, to live with the young man and took up monumental masonry to earn his living. In time, a matter of two weeks, promiscuity had set in and Betty had soon worked his way through the entire gay community of Crowlas.

Now a more sober being, entirely confident in his sexuality, Betty would like to meet one young man with whom he could share the rest of his life. If you think that Betty could be the start of your new life, then write to him at Box 4591.

Lucinda Polkinghorne (26) describes herself as a professional lady who supports herself by living on her talents. Originally from Colinsey Road on the Treneere Estate in Penzance and a graduate of Lescudjack School, she has moved to occupy plush premises and consulting rooms in Morrab Road, Penzance -- (just a few doors down from the Library -- 2nd bell).

Lucinda has a bath at least twice a day and is proud of her state of cleanliness, regardless of the disgusting condition of some of those she may have been consorting with during the day.

She also takes pride in the fact that all are equally welcome in her establishment, provided that they can stump up the requisite £2.50 per half hour.

Of course, all this energetic economic activity has but one goal and that is to find Lucinda's perfect partner for the rest of her life. If you think that this could be you, then take your £2.50 round to the Morrab Road establishment (just a few doors down from the Library!). Box 1923

EXCLUSIVE: SPARGO AND MADAME SARKOZY IN SECRET LOVE TRYST!
By Political Correspondent Rendell Janner

Elysee watchers have been perplexed by the froideur that characterises the relationship between the new French President, Nicholas Sarkozy, and his wife Cecilia (25). At the election of the new President there should have been a new era at the Elysee, presided over by the President’s glamorous wife, Cecilia (34).

Pictured here in a photo that captures the smouldering beauty of this sensual woman, and which reflects her gypsy and Spanish descent, Cecilia (42) has kept the French and international press guessing as to her intentions.

The Roundup can now reveal the truth behind the reticence of Mme Sarkozy (21) to play "President’s wife" at the Elysee.

Cecilia (52) has been spotted in Lamorna Cove, where she has been sharing a cottage with outspoken firebrand GRUC Councillor Billy Spargo. Mr Spargo (78), who has never married, has been romantically linked with a number of women, boys, and indeed animals over recent years. However, it would seem that this stalwart of the GRUC has truly met his heart’s desire in Mme Sarkozy (49). The couple are even said to be planning to move into a plush flat together on the prestigious Gwavas Estate overlooking Mount's Bay. During a quiet meal "a deux" at the Navy Inn in Penzance, they were overheard discussing having children together.

Mr Spargo (78) has taken to wearing a heavy disguise (seen on the left) in an attempt to shake off the international press -- an attempt in which he has been successful. However, he could not shake off the terriers of the Relubbus press-photographer corps.

The French President is said to be absolutely distraught at the loss of his wife to the Relubbus political leader. However, given the enormous diplomatic weight that Relubbus carries internationally, the French Republic and its President have had to smile and accept the loss of this most beautiful woman (43) to the superior attractions of Spargo and Relubbus. C’est la vie, Sarkozy!

EXCLUSIVE: US TO BECOME PART OF RELUBBUS!

By Political Correspondent Rendell Janner

American society is in meltdown. The incumbent President, George Bush the Little, has lower approval ratings than any other President ever. According to surveys, the average American would be happier having tea with a chimp than with the President -- despite the comfortingly strong physical resemblance between the two.

If you are poor in America, you can’t afford to be sick -- that is a privilege reserved for the rich and insured. This is just one of the many divisions that epitomise the social geography of a once-great land.

When the White Man came to North America, he found an indigenous people who were divided into tribes. New tribes now populate this vast land of different time zones, the difference being that now it is possible to be a member of more than one tribe at the same time. To quote just two examples, there is the Evangelical tribe and the gun-owning National Rifle Association tribe. There are many other tribes, the listing of which is left by this writer to those anorak-wearers who derive pleasure from the task.

Suffice it to say that the USA is rift by divisions and that it is accordingly little wonder that the American public looks, with wistful and envious eyes, across the Atlantic to Relubbus.

A secret gathering of American leaders, past, present, and aspiring, has agreed to approach the Greater Relubbus Urban Council (GRUC) to seek direct rule from Relubbus. The Roundup can confirm that it has learnt from impeccable sources (Liza Penberthy, the cleaner at the GRUC offices) that Councillor Billy Spargo will shortly announce GRUC’s acceptance of the US government’s plea for direct rule from Relubbus.

The role of the American White House (shown left) will b e taken over by the Relubbus "Grey House" (shown right). The Grey House will deal with all American matters. It will have a new carpet and be fully repainted.

It is believed that the GRUC will be dedicating as many as four full-time personnel to the management of American affairs. There will be a specially dedicated telephone connection between Washington and Relubbus, for urgent calls only. For all other matters, there will be a monthly courier connection.

The US will disband all its embassies around the world and will instead be represented abroad by Relubbus diplomats, where there happen to be any. The US armed forces will also be disbanded and the 12th Relubbus Scout troop will, remotely, take over the defence of the USA.

Councillor Billy Spargo’s nephew, Archie Treglown, is to be despatched to Washington (via Hayle fishing boat) with two Relubbus policemen to bring about radical changes: the banning of guns, the redistribution of national wealth equally, the replacement of all churches with Cornish Methodist chapels, and various other steps to make the USA just like Relubbus.

Archie Treglown (pictured left) said last night, "I ebbent bin out of Cornwall ever, so I am lookin’ forward to goin’ ovver to Americee to sort out they yanks.

I aren’t expectin’ no problems, but jest in case anyone duh get a bit teasy, I am taking my cousin and ‘is mate. They are both policemen and they are as ‘ard as nails."

Councillor Spargo has stated that, whilst Relubbus has accepted the USA, it cannot assimilate any more countries at present. This is seen as a warning to Russia, which is believed to have also hoped for direct rule from Relubbus.

DISTRAUGHT BEVERLEY

By Social Affairs Correspondent Rendell Janner

The Roundup has long been known as a publication that fights for equity and for social and poetic justice. It is a reputation of which we are proud. We bring you the moving story of Beverley Tregear and ask, if you are touched by her tale, to send all cheques and donations to Sylvanus Penhaul at the Swordfish in Newlyn.

Beverley Tregear is only 19 years of age. A shy girl, she sits, wordless, on a bench between her two daughters, Tracey (4) on the left and Sharon (6) on her right. The silence is eerie and unsettling.

As she has done for days, Beverley sits and distractedly toys with her husband’s unwashed sock, as though this simple article of clothing could provide her with a link to a man she will never see again. A once powerful olfactory link, it is diminishing in potency day by day.

Her common-law husband, Nev, who was in the same class as her at school, was, for the precious time that they had together, the model of a devoted husband and father.

Nev and Bev were known amongst their many friends at the Soshul as a couple who liked to keep themselves to themselves. They were devoted to each other -- linked by a love so strong that you could almost see its sinews and smell its strength.

Nev, who sometimes worked part time as a rodent catcher with his mates, Trev and Kev, used to come home from the pub every night promptly at 10.45 pm. He never once vomited inside the house, taking particular care to do so on Mrs Hollis’ doorstep on the way home. Being a man of refinement, he almost always urinated the vomit away before he left so that Mrs Hollis was never aware of the religious observance of this practice.

Given this solid background, one cannot understand why he should leave his love nest in Newlyn to move in with Pendeen scrubber Linda Polglaze, pictured here (in miniature for decency’s sake) on the left. In financial straits and reduced to going to the fish ‘n’ chip shop once every two days, instead of every day, Bev now needs your help. Please give generously to keep this family afloat.

My Professor’s a chimp!

By Arts Correspondent Rendell Janner

The gloves were off in furious exchanges at the renowned Relubbus Chamber Music Conservatoire, when several of the students declared that their resident professor contributed nothing to their musical development and "was little better than a chimp" (this latter insult believed to be a cruel play on the professor’s name). The gentleman in question, Professor C. Himp, refused to be drawn into any discussion and remained typically tight-lipped.

Professor Himp, pictured here on the left in a photo taken yesterday, is clearly taken aback by these comments. He is believed to be deeply offended by such wholly unwarranted and unjustified comments from his students.

He has withdrawn from all teaching engagements and can be occasionally glimpsed in the Institute’s garden, perched on a tree, disconsolately munching a banana.

It is not known where this sorry saga leaves the prestigious Relubbus
Conservatoire, but you can rely on the Roundup to keep you posted.
CITY PAGES
TREVASKIS TO LAUNCH HOSTILE BID FOR TESCO!

By City and Business Editor Rendell Janner

Financial market traders in Relubbus, London, and capitals around the world were yesterday all humming with the rumour that W.G. Trevaskis (35), the Relubbus mega-capitalist, is about to launch a hostile bid for Tesco.

Trevaskis, whose wealth is sometimes said to approach even that of RC Oates, has made a name for himself by growth through aggressive acquisition.

Pictured here on the left outside his flagship store in Relubbus, Trevaskis stunned corporate watchers with his daring raid on a Marazion grocery kiosk last year. The future of the kiosk, known locally as Enty Lydia’s, was plunged into doubt after the sudden and untimely demise of Miss Lydia Pollock (87) who owned and ran the kiosk with occasional help from schoolgirl Loveday Rescorla.

In a bold move, only weeks after Miss Pollock passed on, Trevaskis moved in with an offer to take over the kiosk and employ Miss Rescorla (18), who had left school to run and manage the kiosk in the interim period.

The financial world has had only a year to recover from this "revolution in retail" before Trevaskis now appears to be poised to make a bid for Tesco.

According to the Roundup's financial sources, it seems that the rumour trail leads back to a conversation overheard on a bus travelling from Penzance to Relubbus. Mrs Rosemary Hollis (76), who lives next door to Mr Trevaskis’ mother (Gracie) and who is therefore deemed to be "in the know", was overheard saying to a friend, "Gracie was telling me that ‘er boy is goin' to do a lotta buyin in Tesco’s." These few words were all it took to set traders in both Relubbus and London on a path of Tesco share acquisition in the hope of benefiting from a Trevaskis buyout.

The Roundup cornered Trevaskis next to the till in his Relubbus shop and asked him outright about his buying intentions in Tesco’s. Initially tight-lipped, Trevaskis would say nothing at all -- at first. However, he eventually cracked under the pressure of the relentless stare and virulent halitosis of one-eyed Roundup reporter "Grubber" Trevithen. A shame-faced Trevaskis then admitted that, "when we duh run owt o’ things ‘ere before the delivery van duh come, I duh go in Tesco’s and buy un all there."

The simplicity of this cover story from cool Trevaskis was not enough to halt the rumour machine and not enough to calm the markets. The Tesco board is said to be transfixed with panic and many thousands now fear for their jobs in a potentially ruthless shake-up that would mirror the take-over of Enty Lydia’s only last year.

A MAGICAL NIGHT OF MAHLER AND BOTHERAS

From our Music Correspondent, Professor D. Behenna

Last Saturday at the Boscathnoe Arms in Relubbas, I had the great privilege of listening to Mahler’s 8th Symphony -- the "symphony of a thousand" -- played by the Relubbus Triangle and Kazoo quintet, led by Percy Botheras on lead triangle.

The genius of Mahler --as with that of all the greats -- relies upon the skilful interpretation of the musicians to become fully apparent to the audience. In this case, the hall was filled with the cognoscenti (my brother and myself), familiar with every note. And thus, before the performance began, there was a suspense you could touch and taste, as we waited to see what magic Botheras would invoke to bring this body of music alive to us.

There was no need for concern. In the hands of the master that is Botheras, this "body of music" truly sprang into mesmerising life with the first sonorous stroke of his triangle.

The novelty of this 90-minute-long performance was enhanced by the unusual fact that the remainder of the quintet were not called upon to play -- at all -- until the very last note -- a masterstroke indeed.

I can enlighten you further about this masterful musician. Botheras (pictured here on the left in joyful mid-stroke) is by day a milkman for the Kwop. He uses his time on the milkfloat to think out ever new interpretations of music for the triangle.

An even greater surprise for our readers, and especially those who have had the privilege of listening to the work of Mr Botheras, is that he has only been playing the triangle for 5 weeks.

This is an amazing fact, when one considers the dimensions of subtlety that unfold before us as he strikes his triangle with ever greater meaning, leading us further and deeper into entirely new realms of musical expression.

Readers will be able to hear Botheras for themselves next week when he attempts Tchaikovsky’s Fourth symphony in a solo performance at St John’s Hall in Penzance. You are advised to apply early for tickets!

AMERICAN - CORNISH PHRASEBOOK

The Roundup Reports From Dublin

Pictured on the left is the Roundup's newest recruit, Jan "Mad" Carew. (Jan is the one without the handbag.)

Regular readers may recall that Jan joined the Roundup in April as a Temporary Assistant Junior Cub Reporter (acting). Since then his progress has been startling. Following a string of scoops, Jan has already been promoted to
Assistant Junior Cub Reporter (acting).

Jan's most recent assignment has been as
the Roundup's Foreign Correspondent in Dublin. He is shown in that city, undertaking research into the gay and lesbian scene. We understand that he has also done extensive research into the Guinness brewing industry and the night life around Temple Bar. So far, the demands of his meticulous research have left him no time to file any actual stories. (We await his first report with keen anticipation! Ed.)

Inside the Saudi Embassy in Relubbus

By Diplomatic Correspondent Rendell Janner

At Number 4 Kenidjack Lane in Relubbus stand the two tents of the Saudi Arabian Embassy. The Roundup was invited inside to meet the inhabitants and have a look around. The main tent is shown in the photograph below, whilst the second tent is a much smaller "ablutions" tent, covering a simple hole in the ground and, next to it, a heap of Sun newspapers.

In the picture on the left we can see (in the middle of the photo) His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed wa Akbar wa al Akshar wa al Capone wa al Qaq wa al Wahabi. Given the length of his name, he asked us to simply call him "Terry".

Terry is a relaxed and amiable man, who has come to feel at home in Cornwall and who now greatly prefers the Cornish climate and way of life to that in his native Saudi Arabia. "At home, is hot, hot, dust and sand. Here is everything better, walahi, the women, the boys, and the goats, walahi bilahi. I like it also very much pasties and cream."

A police guard stands permanently outside the tent to protect His Excellency from the unwelcome attentions of some of the more extreme Methodist groupings, who take offence at the mere presence of even such a nominal Muslim as Terry in Cornwall. One such shadowy armed group, calling itself the Gwennap Gangsters, last week managed to lob horse dung into the ablutions tent, whilst Terry was inside on a "sitting". He said, "Walahi, I sit and stretch and yawn, then flap flies open under weight of thrown horse dung. What mouthful!"

Saudi Arabia is blessed with oil, which has made it rich. Now, the oil is beginning to run out and the country can see an end to its hitherto-guaranteed prosperity. In contrast, now that finds of the highest grade oil in unimaginable quantities have been located in the top field of Ernie Polkinghorne’s farm in Relubbus, the Greater Relubbus Urban Council has found yet another source of riches to add to the industrial and economic engines that power Relubbus on to the top of all global league tables.

Fumbling urgently with his favourite goat, which had trotted in, Terry went on to say, "We humble Ayrabs again -- not cause trouble. We lead quiet life in tent with woman, boy, goat and camel. We don’t bother, you don’t bother. We need protection of Relubbus against world. That why I here, Walahi Bilahi. I love you all".
LONELY HEARTS THAT YEARN FOR YOU!

If you are an unattached male and have been looking for someone you can take home to show your mother, then this is surely the chance that you have been waiting for!
Rebecca Tregurtha (23) is a delightful girl, who has led a quiet, indeed sheltered, life.

A receptionist for a double glazing firm, she lives at home in Hayle with "my Mum and Dad". She has her own car, a Morris Minor Traveller, which she calls "Tickles".

She is a young lady of unexpected talents. She can play "The flight of the Bumble Bee" on her mouth organ and has a strong liking for 19th century Russian Literature, which she reads in the original. For amusement, she likes tripping up blind people and, when the sun is strong enough, she likes "sizzling" ants with her magnifying glass. She has never had a boyfriend, but now believes the time is right and so she is looking for Mr Right! Is that you? If so, write to Box 5634.

Agnes Treveor (32) of Goldsithney is a young lady with love and motorbikes on her mind. She is a fully qualified bike mechanic and has lovingly built by hand the bike shown with her on the left. Orphaned and living -- on benefit -- alone in a caravan, without ever having had a relationship, she would like to meet a man who will share her interests and her life.

Agnes' interests are playing noughts and crosses, doing Latin crosswords and what she calls "insect games". This is her favourite activity and consists of the capture and dissection of live insects. If you fancy spending time with Agnes, write to Box 4781.

Ladies, if you ever dreamed of becoming a queen, then this your chance! By day, Ronald "Lumpy" Treglown (45) is a plumbing and heating engineer, with his own business based at the Upper Relubbus Business Park; but by night Lumpy is a King in his own right. He has declared the Nancledra shed in which he lives his "kingdom" and now seeks a queen to share his realm. His mother, Lydia, has run him up a nice set of kingly regalia, which are now his only non-working clothes.

Lumpy is a man of many parts and spends many a happy evening composing poetry in ancient Greek or in scalding one of his many pet budgerigars. (He has to keep replacing them as the scalding process tends to be fatal -- but "its fun while they last!")

Lumpy has had a number of women in the past and so has a particular wish list of attributes in his chosen queen. She should be a good pasty cook and not say much. ("Better if she’s dumb, really!" says Lumpy.) The shed is basic, so not much is required in terms of housekeeping skills, but she should keep the outside toilet clean. Water supply in the shed is dependent upon the munificence of heaven, so she should be able to look after the water butt, so Lumpy has enough for his monthly bath ("I wain’t get work, if I smell too ‘igh!").

Lumpy has a high requirement for physical love and so is hoping for strong interest -- soon. Impatient ladies should write in to Box 4982.

Billy Pender (spelt with a "P", not a "B", as Billy, most insistently maintains) is a 48-year-old double glazing fitter from Penalverne Estate in Penzance, who is wondering how love has come to pass him by. Known about town by his distinctive Rococco hairpiece, Billy lives at home with his widowed and very indulgent mother, Dot (76), who likes "to feed’un up".

Billy likes watching television with his mother and also enjoys bingo with her and her friends. Billy has not yet had a girlfriend but, thanks to the wonders of the internet, is already sure that he will be "into copropholia". He is immensely proud of his now extensive collection of bottled interesting smells collected from a variety of people and places over the years. Clearly, collecting from some people, such as the Pope, the Queen, and Baroness Thatcher has demanded great ingenuity and could have involved prosecution, if he had been caught. But Billy is nothing if not inventive and resourceful and has been able to make great use of his "cover" as a double glazing fitter.

If you are a young lady, who would like to enter this world of derring do and stand at Billy’s side, then Box 4529 is the one for you.
